BIOGRAPHY

Jose Luis Zumeta began to be employed at Graphs Valverde of San Sebastian at the age of fourteen, like graphical draftsman.


His interest in painting led him to the School of Arts and Crafts in San Sebastian and the classes taught at the Artists Association of Guipuzcoa. At 19 he won the National Gold Medal in the Youth Painting Competition held in Madrid.


He moved to Paris in 1959 and this experience will determine your subsequent career, as he had the opportunity to know the latest trends in the international forefront.


A year later he returned to the Basque country and settled in Hondarribia, where he began working with the sculptor Remigio Mendiburu and participates in his first exhibition in San Sebastian. A year later he made his first solo exhibition at the Municipal Art Hall of San Sebastian and later in the Castle of Charles V in Hondarribia.


Between 1962 and 1963 living in Stockholm and London.



In 1965 he co-founded the group Gaur, along with Jorge Oteiza, Eduardo Chillida, Remigio Mendiburu, Nestor Basterretxea, Rafael Ruiz Balerdi, Amable Arias and Sistiaga, a group which, in Franco's dictatorship, was born with the intention to resume the dialogue and the relationship with the international forefront and eventually became a pioneer in many aspects and artistic point of reference worldwide Basque artistic activity of the moment.


In 1967 he won the  first prize in Great Prize of Basque Painting with his work " Honoring to Picasso's Gernika ".


In 1970 participates in a group exhibition at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico, being also present in the same year in the Spanish Young Painters group show held in New York.


Between 1973 and 1974 carried out two large ceramic murals Usurbil and Pasajes.




Jose Luis Zumeta a eté consideré comme un des artistes plus représentatifs du Pays Basque de l´après-guerre. Ses oeuvres on peut les trouver dans les plus importants musées du Pays Basque Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bilbao, Musée San Telmo  de San Sebastien, Artium de Vitoria-Gasteiz (Besux-Arts d´Alava)

et aussi à l´étranger,  Musée de la Solidarité de Santiago de Chile.
